Comment: i learnt the basic knit one, purl one from my mum, when i was about 7 years old - it didnt last, as much as i wanted to learn more. my sister-in-law is inspirational and knits such fabulous jumpers and everything else, that i told myself off and picked up a set of needles! She has recently had my first nephew so i decided to knit a jumper for him - i have completed one side and am in the middle of the other - it is soo addictive, i love it -until my 7 year old picks up the needles and i have to keep stopping to help her...dont know who she reminds me off!! i am amazed at how many children and young people are on this site with their knitting stories- how fabulous and inspirational!! Name: Susan Subject: new knitter Comment: I have been a crocheter for many, many years. My church is doing a mission project to knit baby sweaters so I decided to learn to knit. I found a wonderful group of women who meet each week and knit and share. Nancy taught me the basics. Upon reflection I realized I had bit off more than I could chew trying such a difficult pattern right away. I found a easier sweater to practice on. Thanks for all the encouraging words. Right now I have my Starbucks drink and 2 knitted "transitioning (red) holiday (from x-mas to valentines day) tube projects I'm working on. I've just become an Aunt!! So I'm making a blanket (very first one!) for my new nephew!!Well, thats all for now. Name: Judy Subject: Why I took up knitting Comment: I am a recent kidney transplant recipient and as such am discouraged from working with the potentially sick public, especially during flu season. I am retired and was looking forward to volunteer work. I took up knitting with the idea of "giving back" somehow so my first projects have been preemie hats. The hats are so darn cute and offer lots of opportunity for growth in knitting skills. I have really appreciated this site for its free patterns and encouragement. Thanks for your efforts on this. Name: Irri Subject: Prayer Shawls Comment: I am 16 and have been knitting for 8 years. One of my first projects was a triangular shawl called a prayer shawl. My teacher called it this because as she knitted she said a little prayer, it didn't matter what the prayer was just anything. I started my first one then gave it to a Hospice facility to give to one of their paticients. A week later I get a card in the mail from the man they gave it to, thanking me for giving it to him, he said it was the best thing he ever got. I never thought that knitting something some simple would have such an impact on someone's life. I am so glad that their are people that keep this craft alive. Thank you all. Name: Caitlin Subject: Knit to IMPACT the world! Comment: When I knit, I sometimes feel like I want to knit items to give away to others. At other times, I feel like knitting only for myself. I encourage you to impact the world with your knitting one small step at a time. There are various charities and hospitals that would love to accept your donations. p.s. I am fifteen and only started knitting last summer. So far, I have completed 5 or 6 little projects. I enjoy knitting and hope to find a way to help others with it. Name: Elizabeth Subject: Don't give up Comment: When you have reached that stage where you will leave the comfort zone of dish cloths and plain undecorated scarves just remember that sure it might not work out the first time or the fifth or possibly the tenth but sooner or later if you take your time it will work. Name: Sue Subject: I love knitting! Comment: I taught myself to knit in my 30's and so sorry I never started sooner! I am fascinated by socks...especially socks made with self striping yarn! I have found that I am more likely to finish a pair of socks if I knit them both together. I knit the cuff on one, then the other...then 10 rows on one...then the other, the heel flap and turn on one, then the other, etc. This way they both get finished at the same time and they are an exact match and I have a pair of socks instead of just one! I have at least two sets of every type of DPN's! Love it! Name: Laura Subject: Knitting Comment: Years ago I quit smoking by knitting!! I wound up with a scarf about thirty feet long but it helped me kick a nasty habit. I kept my knitting stuff in a brown paper bag and carried it everywhere with me. Although frustrating, never give up! I'll never forget the time I knit a whole purse only to discover I had been accidentally increasing each round so I had more of a pillow-case thing. I've been knitting for two years and look forward to many more! Name: granma Subject: tricks of the trade Comment: I had knitted for YEARS before a friend showed me a fast way to the knit stitch, loop the yarn in left hand. [I am right-handed]. Beginners, remember to let the needles DO THE WORK. No LIFTING the yarn around. Enjoy knitting & crocheting. Name: Tabitha Subject: i love knitting! Comment: I have been knitting for about 3 and a half years since I was 12 in 6th grade, I am not nearly 15 and in 9th and I adore knitting. I often start a project and then forget about it because I only knew how to knit scarves, and I live in Southern California so, I think you get the idea. But this year, I gave myself until Jan 15 to finish my scarf and then hopefully make a matching hat and maybe gloves to go with it in time for winter camp 2010 that is in February.
