I would often hide my needles and yarn when we had friends over, for fear that they would make fun of me for having "an old lady" hobby! Since then I have knitted tons of baby items and given them to these same friends as shower gifts over the years and enjoyed the praise I get in return (I love that non-knitters don't see all the mistakes that you can see from across the room!) I now belong to a knitting group that tries to meet once a week, and am getting ready to donate a big bag on items for our church fair. So if you haven't picked up a pair of needles yet, give it a try, I promise you'll love it, and you're friends will be lining up for you to teach them how to knit too!! Name: Lesley Subject: Knitting ... It's never too late! Comment: I have been crocheting since I was a teenager and made some very nice clothing, like sweaters and a skirt. But I always wanted to learn how to knit. When I turned 50 a couple years ago, I took a deep breath and taught myself how to knit using instructional sites on the Internet. It took me a couple of tries ... For some reason, the hardest thing for me was trying to learn how to cast on! LOL :)) Now a couple years - and dropped stitches - later, I have made some shrugs, fingerless gloves, and two baby sweaters with patterns from this wonderful web site! It's never too late! My first project was a rectangular shawl. I was so proud when I finished it (after almost two months, nevertheless!), and now I knit every single day. We are knitters, and we are proud of what we do. Name: George Subject: knitting Comment: Years ago, at about age 9 I asked my mother to teach me to knit. Well, that didn't last long. Now, much later, I decided to get into it- obviously it takes me a while to make up my mind. Having started about two months ago, I now have almost three and a half scarfs completed. Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I'm now 76 and enjoying it. Name: Dawn Subject: Learning to knit Comment: In 1943, when I was about 11 years old, The girl, aged 16, next door and confined to a wheel chair would sit on the other side of a chain link fence and knit and watch my brothers and I play in the front yard. She asked me if I wanted to learn to knit, and I jumped at the chance. She taught me to knit. My first project, was a pair of argyile socks. One ended up about 2 inches longer in the foot than the other. I gave them to my father, and he always wore them. (he may have changed to something more comfortable when he got out the door, but he always wore them. Because of the attitude of my father and the patience of this sweet girl, I learned to knit. These people are dedicated to knitting and other yarn crafts. Use them. Here in the U K our wool shops are vital to keeping trad. skills alive. Keep knitting! I love the way yarn looks as you knit it, and the different color combos you can make just using your imagination. I do think I was destined to knit because about a year ago, I was looking at knitting patterns for knitting food and I was like, hey, I'll make my own pattern without dp needles! So I sat down and knitted a carrot, complete with green leaves and all!! So it just goes to show, beleive in your self annd what you can knit!!!!! Name: Roxanne Subject: Knitting with kids Comment: I've recently started teaching knitting to 3-5 grade students at my school. The number of students interested in learning to knit is amazing. This site has been a great place to find patterns since several students want to make toys for their own pets or a local shelter. Thank you so much Name: JoAnn Subject: Knitting Comment: In these bad times, the population at the food pantrys or food banks is up considerably. Since I work everyday, it is hard to volunteer my time but I knit a lot in the evenings, I made several pairs of children's mittens, hats, slipper socks and neck scarves of all types. I take them to the food pantrys, lay them out on a table and tell those who are in need of warm clothing , please take something to help keep you and your family warm. These people are delighted to get some type of warm clothing and I am delighted to be able to use up a lot of scrap yarn making these items. It takes little time to whip up a pair of mittens or slipper socks or even a scarf. I feel I have contributed even though I am unable to work at the food banks or pantrys.
